1,000 Yard Stare

This is an image of an unsmiling young soldier sitting on his bunk in Viet Nam.

1,000 Yard Stare

They have “that” look ~
the eyes are dark and ringed with red ~
pain-filled, tired eyes,
empty, angry eyes, almost dead...
eyes that are full of the horror that they’ve seen,
I wonder what they saw in jungles green;
what changed their souls forevermore
though they are now on friendly shore ~
What did they see to change them so?
I need to know.
If you think you need to live in silence
carrying the burden
of things long gone ~
you’re wrong.
I can’t change anything
but I can say hold on to me
when the nights are long ~
Sometimes I think you
can’t see the forest for the tree ~
you can see 1,000 yards
but still, you can’t see me.
