AT ATTENTION

He is at attention the way he was taught in basic.

His uniform is crisp and neat,

all of his awards and decorations on his chest in the proper order.

His father is proud of him;

as all of the male members in his family, he has served proudly.

There are tears in his mother’s eyes as she looks at him.

In a short while they will close the coffin.

Another soldier has returned from war.

Another family is grieving, wondering why.
