Attention: A Sailor Returns
He stands as though proud,
His family on the other side of the tape cries, Proud.
His mind is still "Over There",
His body has come to the "Real World".
Finally, the speeches end;
The Chief shouts, "Dismissed!"
His mother hugs him, Proud.
His family is so happy his name will not be on The Wall;
His soul sees that "They" haven't made it back.
Why did so many die, why did they fall around him;
Why has he come to the real world?
His mind is battered, his soul is just gone.
The family doesn’t understand why his eyes look so far, far away;
The VA just wishes he were with his brothers.
So does he! Proud of nothing.
