Chores
There are some things I have done
I wouldn’t wish on anyone.
Though I’m hardly a plaster saint,
I usually performed without complaint;
But the most difficult task of all
Came from an unexpected telephone call:
I informed my sister (inwardly crying),
In a gentle voice, that she was dying.

My oldest sister died from cancer in 2005. It has occurred to me,
that I, the youngest sibling, was the one to tell the eldest that
her time here on earth was nearing its end. And here is the
interesting part; as I was writing this short poem, I heard a sound.
I turned my head and saw that the door leading to the back porch was
standing open. The back porch is completely enclosed; the outer door
and all the windows are closed and locked. I set the trash out
around 6:30 this morning and there's the possibility that I may not
have closed the inner house door tightly afterwards. |
