Christmas Almost

It is almost Christmas in Calhoun County. The Calhoun County Road Department has put up the Christmas decorations on the light poles and around the town buildings and the bandstand. The Calhoun County Supervisors will not let the Christmas decorations be put up until the week before Christmas. They feel that Christmas is a magic time and putting up the decorations too early takes away from the magic.

Ben Marshall will be at the Calhoun County Court House as Santa Claus, and all of those wishing to come and ask him for what they want for Christmas are welcome. Pictures of those wishing them, on Santa's lap, will be available.

There is a strange thing about Christmas in Calhoun County. There is not a lot of gift giving, as the people in Calhoun County believe it is the season for love and good will.

Our Lady of the Redeemer Catholic Church keeps track of what the kiddies ask Santa for Christmas, and most of the time they manage to slip the present into the child's stocking if the parents cannot afford it.

There will be a Christmas dinner with all of the trimmings for those that wish it, no questions asked, at the VFW on Christmas Eve and then another on Christmas Day at the Baptist Church, so no one in Calhoun County really has to cook or be without a Christmas dinner.

This is a tradition that was started back in the early 30's when there was not much work in Calhoun County, nor much money. They all got together and made sure the children had their Christmas and that all were fed. It has somehow continued through the years, and when a donation is requested all make sure they give what they can.

There never is an excuse for anyone to be without on Christmas Day, and to make sure all are taken care of, the Calhoun County Sheriff goes to those houses that might not make it to the supper and makes sure they are taken to the supper or supper is taken to them.

This is the way Christmas is celebrated in Calhoun County and has been for many years, and never is there a child that has to say they didn't get what they asked Santa for Christmas, and the spirit of love and giving are very much alive

The Calhoun County Board of Supervisors wishes you and yours the Merriest of Christmases and the Happiest of New Years, and if you have the time drop by the VFW or the Baptist Church and have some of the good food that is being served.
