Civilian

I built a makeshift bridge
sweating and wondering
if it would hold the weight

Just as I thought it would hold
I find it very short of its goal
unused and covered with mold

Made only of materials
that I found along the way
in my journey from day to day

As I am still laboring
deep in my soul I know
it is to a place I can never go

A bridge of time
over a river that does wind
a river of tears from other years

I have built the bridge
Yet you bid me never to cross
...hording to yourself your loss

I am trapped on this side
...the chasm is too deep
...the river...it is too wide
