DON’T FORGET TO PUT FLOWERS
The flowers were beautiful and
nicely arranged
Great bunches and sprays and
even horse shoes
Even a garland from my wife
who’s estranged
I‘m sure glad I won’t be writing
the “Thank You’s”
The birds are joyfully singing
in the tall trees
The bees are seeking nectar from
every bloom
The weeds and the grass swaying
in the breeze
The church bell rings like the
voice of doom
The sky is blue and clear, not a
cloud in sight
So nice to put the slickers and
umbrellas away
Though some say this event needs
rain to be right
And that it is a criminal waste
of a nice sunny day
Who will be the chosen to get my
tri-folded Flag
The detail commander has it in
his gloved hands
Will it be my son, my wife or my
ex, what a drag
Did I say and is there anyone
who understands
Next I’ll be lowered away and
take the long trip
To join my friends who went this
way long ago
When all those old guys see me
they’re gonna flip
I can’t believe how much I have
missed them so
But my wife she… she has a tear
in her pretty eye
Even my son stands as if he
carries a new weight
Is all that for me as I did not
really want to die
But there was so much pain I
just couldn’t wait
I’m sorry my loves, but I’m
being pulled far away
I know we will be apart for
awhile that I believe
But in the time of the Eternal
Clock, only a day
I will be waiting for you, my
blessing to receive
So throw in the tokens on my
bronze casket here
Shovel in the dirt so I may be
at rest and free of pain
My family is together and
standing above me there
Not a one of us will ever pass
this way ever again
