GOODBYE FOREVER

There you stood looking so very proud

Your breaking heart was beating out loud

The last deed for you was left to be done

My battle was at last over and nothing won

I told you it had to go this way long ago

That did not mean that I wanted it to be so

To have fallen before I could find my worth

And wind up in this lonely hole in the cold earth

I never got to tell you how deeply it was I felt

As I saw the tears that dripped and fell as you knelt

While these soldiers carried me to my final rest

I wanted to tell them they all were the very best

All that is left for me to do is set my soul free

And know I served the cause we love, our liberty

That I will go to that place where warriors go

Regretting I didn’t say often enough I love you so

I hope that someday you will come to understand

I went this way not because of a wrong command

But because of the deep feelings I have for my land

This honored place I rest after I made my final stand

So as these brave troops fold my flag into a triangle

Just accept my passing, don’t let your emotions tangle

I knew that this could happen and I hope you did too

My fight was good and to my country I was always true

Take care of your mother; she loves you like I did in life

Respect her as she is the one who was my loving wife

She will miss me and may not understand what we know

That some things must die that in the Spring some grow

Don’t flinch my son as the Honor Guard fires that last volley

Or weep as Taps is played though it be sad and so melancholy

I’m proud, son you also chose to follow the example I gave

So give a last salute, do an about face. Walk from this grave.

Amen
