I KNEW NOT GOD

I knew not God in Vietnam,
I doubt that he was there,
He did not all the killing damn,
Nor the fear in me repair,
He did not side with Uncle Sam,
Nor side with Ho Chi Minh,
And I am just the man I am,
Despite my love of him.
We prayed, we all did, there in Nam,
But it did not change a thing,
Nor did it change the will of man,
Of future wars to sing.
For since by God all war began,
To peace we cannot cling.
