I SEE NO HEAVEN

I see no heaven in a dead man's eyes,
Nor do I feel the presence of his God,
I watch but see no spirit when he dies,
Depart his body defying mortal sod.
He lies there dead, his skin turning grey,
His sightless eyes white and nearly shut,
His paling lips have nothing more to say,
All Earth's sounds to his deaf ears are shut.
'Twas not his death but how he lost his life,
That leaves me cold with horror and regret,
Shot to death a soldier with a wife,
And with a Mother who will ever fret.
No sir! I see no Angel by his side,
Nor do I see a purpose why he died.
