Battle of Shiloh ~ Library of Congress
MORE THAN JUST A NAME
(In Memory of a Distant Cousin)
William H. Swanger
1842-1862
I never met you face to face
Your name is listed in my family tree
The blood that flows through my veins
Is what links you to me
You died from wounds at Shiloh
You were buried far from home
Why didn't they send you back
To the place where you were born?
Though many years separate us
I'll think of you today
You will not be forgotten loved one
Nor the price you had to pay
More than a hundred and forty years have passed
This one will not be the same
Today I will remember you
And that you're more than just a name.
