"No Longer Kaw-ahn"

~~Dedicated to R.G. Short upon “Stopping the Drum”

He spoke with heavy heart

Holding back grievous sob

Retelling the loss of a hundred

About his comrades in their job

In his dreams, their screams

Replay over and over aloud

He said he can hear them

Just as loud as if in a crowd

He didn’t know whose fault

It was; nobody came to help

‘Twas too late; air support called

But the enemy’s goal was to skelp

This Kiowa Warrior; lonely Soldier

Is part of ‘The Walking Dead’

Survived that battled hell hole

Fear settled in and soon prayed

He didn’t know their names

Nor of their families’ lives

He knew not where they

Came from; but sorrow arrives

Emotions of anguishing pain

Constant reminders of his unit

‘I feel bad for my comrades,

Didn’t know they were the wrong coordinates’

‘When it was all said and done

Many fell to their untimely death

Now they are gone; and I am here’

Speaking of these things with saddened breath

‘Tis is your turn to ‘Stop the Drum’

The T’ow-Kow-’aht await till the end

Of ‘Meeting of the Enemy’ dance

Continued till your lance made its descend

O gray skied day with mist all around

Aunts, uncles, and family have gone on

Standing amidst many Kiowa P’ah-be

Our Kiowa People; no longer ‘Kaw-ahn’
