OBSERVATION ON A WINTER DAY

Mourning doves

look for seed I have

scattered on frozen

ground -

Blue jays

chase chickadees

away, while one lone cardinal

makes the sweetest sound -

And I, watching

from the kitchen window

marvel at the resilience

of little creatures

in their small world

made up of several trees

and bushes on this little

patch of frozen earth

where the snow has

banked and swirled -

I watch them living little lives

before my eyes....

I admire their determination

and their feathered beauty,

as they take to the skies

startled by something

I cannot see -

I feel so small.

Just one observer

in a wondrous world

of white -

Someone who scattered seeds

under a barren tree.
