ONLY ONE

Only one soldier died today

on the other side of the world -

only two children cry today

his little boy and girl.

Only one soldier died today

so sayeth the daily news

And the "war" is over as they say

But it just gives me the blues...

How do they use a word like "only"

when mentioning that one -

He was a mother and father's child,

he was their only son.

"Only" has a bitter sound

when the child is your own -

when his wife and little children

are left, so all alone.

It matters whether one or ten

Each must be accounted for

and "only" never used again

when referring to a War.
