Set Me Free

Lying here in pain and fear,

I hear the cautious steps grow near;

Half-blinded by the blood in my eyes,

I see a rifle muzzle rise.

Unable to speak, barely able to hear,

I gaze into eyes filled with fear,

And somehow, I’m not a bit surprised

To also see the hate in those eyes.

You killed my family, destroyed my home,

And now I lie here dying alone;

You claim you came to set me free,

Instead you’ve become the death of me.

You’re angry because I’ve killed and maimed;

If our roles were reversed, you’d do the same…

So pull the trigger and let me be,

Then carry on setting my country free.
