SINCERITY
There is no God as such, beyond the mind, And the mind decays when the body dies, And nothing but the bones is left behind, Exposed to ants and worms and greedy flies. We are and were those things we came to be, As we through life developed a growing brain, Which gained all knowledge through our eyes that see, And brought us all our happiness and pain. Without a mind to think with we are naught, For our minds do form the character of whom we are, And there our conscious selves are born and taught, To lead us to our actions in peace and war. But while we are what we do seem to be, I must be kind to you and you to me.

Tis by our acts that we do right or wrong, For words are meant or do not mean a thing, We stand for what we say for we belong, To all the actions that our thoughts do bring. You can insult a flag with flame and fire, Bur words can't burn a single strand of cloth, As is a heel useless without a tire, Then idle words do wither with every scoff. Words describe the brain from whence they came, For they paint the pictures of the thinking mind, And lead to actions that are done in shame, Or yet in action are more purposefully defined. For what we say we are is seldom true, And we will be judged by the things we do.

I see among God’s children baser deeds, From those who express in words a truer faith, For while their words do claim to honor creeds, Their prejudice their own beliefs disgrace. Quite often very nice these friendly foe, Are different people when the sun doth set, For their kind words by their own actions show, Are falsely spoken without the least regret. Flowers are what they are and smell so sweet, And nettles that sting are of themselves revealed, But a flower that is a nettle hides deceit, And a nettle that is a flower will lie concealed. Words may hide the truth from an honest eye, But a single action will reveal one’s every lie.
