THE SNOWMAN

The snowman is crying himself away,
Buttons beneath his melting feet,
And all the Robins sit and pray,
On the frigid shroud of frozen sheet.
Goodbye! Goodbye! Oh warrior fair,
Who by life’s elements takes his leave,
And melts away into the air,
While all the Robins nod and grieve.
Two buttons still like fiery eyes,
Peer upwards to the yellow gild,
From where his vanished body lies,
Where all the air around is stilled.
Goodbye! Goodbye! The cold persists,
And hides the hill in gentle mists.
