Still...On A Southern Porch

Little cemeteries are bordered

by mighty oak and pine

Here and there are stones marked "CSA"

All weathered by wind and time

The old people still talk of hardships

Of great-grandmothers

Who took on loneliness' chore

Of great- grandfathers who went off to war

Of soldiers who left the plow

At a time when history was bleak

It was no course for the weak

The battlefields are parks

And shopping centers now

They speak of them with pride

And in respect...their heads bow

Yes...the echoes and sobs of an old war

are still heard around here

And the tune "Dixie"

Is always playing somewhere...
