Thanksgiving Again

It's nearly Thanksgiving,

that very special day ~

when we thank the Lord our God

for blessings that have come our way -

But I sat today, and filled a box

with cookies, gum and candy

to send to soldiers in the desert

where it's lonely, hot and sandy  ~

For 40 years, I've sat and filled

boxes for soldiers, sailors, Marines

to send a bit of home for Christmas,

to those barely out of their teens.

Put down your rifle, soldier.

Have some cookies or a candy cane ~

I hope the angel didn't break

and there's no sandstorm or rain.

I'm grateful I can do this

for those protecting you and me ~

But how I wish that they were home

and that wars would cease to be.
