Thousand Yard Stare

As I watch the glow of another rocket slice through the air,
leaving a thin, trail of smoke behind it.

As I look into the distance, I see the black smoke rise, telling me
where it hit.

A distant rumble fills the air.

What is that blank look? Can it be the thousand-yard stare?

I have seen it as the fatigue and realization of
battle sets in, blood, moans of pain fill the night.

Brothers scrambling into another fire fight.

Blasts of light fill the night, sparkling, glistening,
roaring through my mind.

If it was not for that stare, I would be blind.

These crazy thoughts racing through my mind,
Good over Evil, time after time, why did he have to die to
preserve Freedom?

War and Death, Peace and Life, are there any victory to this
battle? War be Damned.

I know people want to live free, their very survival depend on you
and me.

My heart is torn between another life slowly leaving, and
the desire to set men free.
