Transcending the Slope

My mind was the field left fallow

When my duty was said and done

With only my sadness to wallow

With no escape, no place to run

That is the whole of war, my friend

That is the only medal you'll earn

It is the sadness you must transcend

It is your life and total concern

When deep in the recesses of thought

There is triumph in a sliver of light

You may drown the sadness you fought

With sunshine and simple delight

There is life after war, you know

There is laughter, smiles and hope

Seeds planted in the fallow field will grow

As you transcend that slippery slope
