WAITING

Alone I watch that flickering screen,

Watching, watching every night,

But all I see is where he's been,

And never see him in the fight.

One glimpse is all my sad heart needs,

A fleeting glimpse as he goes past,

The snapshot that my worry greeds,

But all my hopes are daily dashed.

No news, no letters, Oh my God,

Please let me know that he's alright,

And not lying wounded on the sod,

In the savagery of an Asian night.

I love you, love you please come home,

Don't leave me dear to be alone.

I watch them dancing in the hall,

The happy faces and nimble feet,

It's as though there is no war at all,

Everyone’s so happy kind and sweet.

How can it be that you're away,

In a foreign land of storm and rain,

Where every day you kill and slay,

And scream and shout with fear and pain.

While here at home we live in peace,

Enjoy our breakfast and our tea,

While you face the threat of deaths increase,

For what? To claim that we are free?

Oh!  Someone’s knocking at the door...

It's a soldier; I wonder what he's knocking for...?
