War Children
Little children underfed
Begging for US soldiers' bread
Smoking menthol when they can
Salem was their favorite brand
Filling sandbags all day long
Little ones, not very strong
They worked for GI food
And a few piasters we’d include
They fed their families, working hard
By filling sand bags for perimeter guards
This part of war no one sees
War torn children overseas
I’m sorry now, we exploited them
But mature soldiers we weren’t then
We were just kids ourselves
Putting food in children’s mouths
