When You Are Old

When you are old

And can’t read

A lick

I shall open

Up a novel

And read

With greatest

Expression

I’d walk with

You by your

Side

And show

You the earth

Beyond the

Snowy sky

We would

Walk

Hand ‘n hand

While I lead

Away

No cane

Or walking stick

Will replace

Your spirited stride

For with patience

I’d wait while

You gain your gait

I’d carry

On the most

Animated

Conversation

All the while

Knowing

You may not

Be able to hear

But laugh, oh yes

Laugh, because it

Is catchy

You would smile

Too

When you

Grow old

I’ll ne’er

Forget

What kind

Of person

You have

Been to me

A hero

With wings

Of gold

Strength

Till the end

No amount

Of personal

Belongings

Nor any memorabilia

Will take

The place of

What I treasure

In you,

When you get old

Even if,

And only if

It is time

To say

Goodbye for now

When you are

Put into the ground

In the finest of care

I’ll miss you more

Than when you got old
