YOU WERE A CHILD ONLY YESTERDAY
How quickly the years seem to slip away. You were a child only yesterday. Preferring jeans and sneaks to gingham and lace You would run through the woods And catch frogs by the pond Or blow seeds from the stem of a dandelion wand. So pretty you looked with your fine silken hair As you ran with your kite through the breeze then dash off again to climb trees. We'd gather berries together From the blackberry vine To make our favorite pie And eat it all beneath a tree We shared so much, you and I. How quickly you've grown, You're no longer a child. Now clothed in the finest of lace As you walk down the isle with grace. But don't forget to climb trees, And fly kites in the breeze, Nor the taste of blackberry pie. How quickly the years seem to slip away, We shared so much, you and I. © 10/14/2006 by Alan Winters
